Stephen Salters (Baritone) was born in Milford, Connecticut. He is a graduate of Boston University, where he studied with Joan Heller and Phyllis Curtin. He has since performed both operatic and concert repertoire with many orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Handel & Haydn Society, the Houston Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony and the Tokyo Philharmonic. He has also appeared at such festivals as the Aldeburgh, Banff, Edinburgh, Tanglewood and the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave. On the opera stage, Salters has appeared with the Opéra National de Paris, Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Rennes, Opéra du Rhin and Opéra de Tours in such roles as Yamadori in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, Melot in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, the Novice’s Friend in Britten’s Billy Budd, Eumée in Fauré’s Pénélope and Curio in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto. In the United States he has appeared as Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Silvio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, and in the title role of the world premiere production of Elena Ruehr’s Toussaint Before the Spirits. Salters has also given recitals in New York, Washington, Boston, Cleveland, San Francisco, Milan and Tokyo. His recordings include a disc of French mélodies, German Lieder and spirituals with pianist Shiela Kibbe for Cypres and Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride on the Telarc label. A 1999 participant in the program for singers at Ravinia’s Steans Institute for Young Artists, he made his festival debut in the 2003 concert production of Weber’s Der Freischütz and returned last year for Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand.” Recent credits include recitals in France and Spain and a concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Upcoming engagements include a performance for the Vocal Arts Society in Washington, D.C., and the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for Opera Memphis.
